Myopia Management
Serving Sunset Park, Brooklyn | Flushing and Long Island City, Queens
Myopia (nearsightedness) is the most common refractive error in the world, and its prevalence is rising, particularly among children and young adults. The specialists at NY Partners Ophthalmology provide comprehensive myopia care and myopia control treatments for patients of all ages across New York City.
What Is Myopia?
Myopia occurs when the eye is slightly too long from front to back, or when the cornea is too curved. Instead of focusing light directly on the retina, the eye focuses it in front of the retina, making distant objects appear blurry while close objects remain clear. Myopia typically develops in childhood and tends to progress through the teen years before stabilizing in early adulthood.
Myopia Symptoms
Blurry vision when looking at distant objects (the board at school, road signs, a TV across the room)
Clear vision up close (reading, phone screens)
Squinting to see distant objects more clearly
Eye strain or headaches, particularly after tasks requiring distance vision
In children: sitting closer to the TV, holding books very close, or having difficulty seeing the board at school
Myopia Risk Factors
Family history:
Myopia has a strong genetic component; children with one or both myopic parents are at higher risk
Limited time outdoors:
Research consistently shows that more time spent outside during childhood reduces myopia risk and slows progression
Excessive near work:
Prolonged reading, screen use, and other close-up tasks are associated with myopia development and progression
Age:
Myopia typically begins in school-age children and progresses most rapidly during the growth years
Myopia Control for Children
For children whose myopia is progressing, NY Partners Ophthalmology offers evidence-based myopia control strategies designed to slow the rate of prescription change and reduce long-term risk:
Low-dose atropine eye drops: nightly drops that have been shown to significantly slow myopia progression in children; applied at bedtime to minimize side effects
MiSight® 1-day contact lenses: the first FDA-approved soft contact lens specifically designed to slow myopia progression in children aged 8-12
Orthokeratology (Ortho-K): specially designed rigid contact lenses worn overnight that temporarily reshape the cornea to provide clear daytime vision without glasses or contacts, while also slowing progression
Essilor Stellest® Lenses: specialized eyeglass lenses designed to correct vision and help slow the progression of myopia in children.

Myopia Correction Options
Glasses: the simplest correction; updated as the prescription changes
Contact lenses: daily, bi-weekly, or monthly soft lenses that correct distance vision
LASIK: permanent laser vision correction for eligible adults with stable myopiae
EVO ICL: an implantable lens placed inside the eye; ideal for high myopia or patients who aren't LASIK candidates
SMILE PRO: minimally invasive laser vision correction for eligible adults with myopia and astigmatism
