Multifocal Intraocular Lens Implants

Serving Sunset Park, Brooklyn | Flushing and Long Island City, Queens
Cataract surgery creates an opportunity to address refractive errors at the same time. At NY Partners Ophthalmology, Sophia Siu, MD, and the surgical team offer a full range of premium intraocular lens options, including multifocal IOLs, extended depth-of-focus lenses, and toric IOLs, giving patients the chance to see more clearly at every distance after surgery.

What Are Multifocal Intraocular Lenses?

Intraocular lenses (IOLs) are artificial lenses implanted into the eye during cataract surgery to replace the natural lens that has become clouded. Standard monofocal lenses correct vision at one distance only, typically distance, meaning reading glasses are still needed afterward. Multifocal IOLs are FDA-approved premium lenses engineered with multiple focusing zones that allow the eye to transition smoothly between near, intermediate, and distance. For many patients, surgery substantially reduces or eliminates the need for glasses.

Benefits of Multifocal IOLs

Clear vision at near, intermediate, and far distances
Reduced dependence on glasses or contact lenses after cataract surgery
FDA-approved with a well-established safety record
Improved quality of life for patients who want greater visual freedom
A single procedure that addresses both the cataract and the refractive correction simultaneously
The NY Partners Ophthalmology team tailors each IOL recommendation to your prescription, lifestyle, visual demands, and eye health to ensure the best possible outcome.

Types of Intraocular Lenses

Multifocal IOLs

Multifocal lenses divide incoming light across multiple focal points, allowing clear vision at close, intermediate, and far distances. They are an excellent option for patients who want to minimize the use of glasses across all activities.

Extended Depth-of-Focus (EDOF) IOLs

EDOF lenses work differently from traditional multifocal lenses; instead of creating distinct focal zones, they produce a single elongated focal point that extends the range of clear vision. This design tends to reduce the visual disturbances (halos, glare) that some patients notice with multifocal lenses, while still providing meaningful freedom from glasses for distance and intermediate tasks.

Toric IOLs

Toric IOLs are designed specifically to correct astigmatism, a refractive error caused by an irregular corneal shape, at the time of cataract surgery. Without a toric lens, patients with astigmatism would still require glasses for clear distance vision after surgery, even with a standard IOL. Toric lenses eliminate that need for many patients.

The IOL Implantation Procedure

IOL placement is performed during cataract surgery as an outpatient procedure. After numbing the eye with drops and offering a sedative for relaxation, your surgeon removes the clouded natural lens through a small incision and gently inserts the folded IOL, which unfolds into position inside the eye. No stitches are required. The procedure typically takes 15 to 30 minutes per eye, and most patients notice improved vision within one to two days.

Choosing the Right IOL

The NY Partners Ophthalmology team determines the best lens fit after a thorough pre-surgical evaluation. This includes a review of your medical and eye health history, your visual goals and lifestyle, a comprehensive eye exam, precise measurements of your corneal curvature and eye length, and any relevant imaging. Your provider will walk you through the options clearly so you can make a confident, informed decision before surgery.
